We can classify the 2020 harvest as an exceptional vintage, both in quality and quantity.

Due to the shortage of rains during the vegetative cycle (only 65mm), the health of the grapes was exceptional and the wines obtained showed excellent quality.

The warm, dry spring with average temperatures of 19,96ºC followed by a hot summer with an average temperature of 23,96ºC helped with the flowering, quantity and quality of the grapes.

Even with these high temperatures, the irrigation was adequate for the grape and the growth of the canopies, allowing the vintage to absorb the color, sugar and aroma.

The combination of high temperatures and dry seasons meant that the Malbec had an early maturation. Ripening accelerated very quickly so we had to start harvesting earlier. This allowed us however, to improve the life of the plants for years to come.

Finally, our harvest increased this year in comparison to last year. 396,000 kilograms of grapes were harvested. 221,000 Kilograms were Malbec. The remaining kilograms are other varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Bonarda, Pinot Noir and Chardonay.

2020 WINE HARVEST REPORT ALGODON WINE ESTATES SRL.
By Mauro Nosenzo – Winemaker

This year will be unforgettable for all winery workers. This year’s harvest was affected by two major factors: the warmest conditions on record and COVID-19.

One of the earliest and warmest vintages on record, 2020 harvest was brought forward by around a month and will undoubtedly be remembered for the strict logistics involved in harvesting the grapes. Without a doubt it was an exceptional vintage.

According to Mauro: “The color and freshness of this year will be memorable, at first I was afraid of harvesting early but when I started to analyze the grape I adjusted the process. This adjustment was key to obtain fresh and intense wines”

The accelerated ripening of the grapes allowed high sugar levels; which translate into alcohol while maintaining the natural acidity and low pH, the wines will be generous in their aroma, with medium-high alcohol levels but fresh.

The Chardonnay, fermented in second-use barrels, will give us delicate aromas and fresh flavors.

Undoubtedly, Malbec will be the star this year, as every year in this vintage.

The quality of the reds is surprisingly excellent, with a lot of color and structure.

In warmer harvests, it is believed that the wines are of lower quality, but in 2020 this is not the case. The wines have good acidity and low pH.
